Nintendo is planning to reduce the price of the standalone 3DS AC adapter in Japan from ¥1,500 ($18.75) to ¥1,000 ($12.50).

While Nintendo has made no official announcement to connect the price drop of the AC adapter with the launch of the 3DS XL (which ships without an AC adapter in Japan and Europe), the timing of the two events is rather 'coincidental'.

Andriasang reports that the new pricing for the AC adapter will go into effect on July 12, while the larger 3DS handheld will go on sale in Japan - and Europe - on July 28th.

Those in North America will need to wait until August 19th for the new handheld to arrive on the shelves.

Price fixing

We felt that the lack of an included AC adapter was a baffling oversight by Nintendo in our hands-on review of the 3DS XL, as it will leave first-time 3DS purchasers with an additional cost to bear for their new handhelds.

Those who already own a 3DS (or DSi) can use their current power adapter on the new 3DS XL.

Nintendo has not announced whether Europe would see a reduced cost in the AC adapter price.
