Nintendo has revealed details about its online and community strategy for the 3Ds.

Firstly, the much maligned Friend Code system is being overhauled. 3DS users will now only need to register once as friend codes will not be software dependent. This means that players will only have to add these new universal codes once, and will be able to see when and what their friends are playing.

Another new feature is StreetPass, the system by which 3DS’s connect to one another. Consoles with the feature enabled will automatically share their region, country and details of games played with other 3DS’s that they pass on the street. Miis will also be shared and appear in the other’s StreetPass Plaza, a new community hub on the 3DS.

The new technology was then demonstrated with Super Street Fighter IV 3D, which allows the player to fight anyone in simulated battles using figurines, which can be won in these battles.

Nintendo was keen to stress that this would not happen unless the user had given their permission and that it was all part of a new emphasis on community.
