Japanese business paper Nikkei has reported that Nintendo’s 3DS will have software installation functionality thanks to onboard memory. As detailed by Andriasang, “multiple games” can be installed, meaning that carts needn’t be carried away from the home.

As no details on capacity are forthcoming, we can’t confirm whether this feature will be limited to a few games at a time, or whether it’s indicative of a service comparable to the App Store or PSN.

What this feature means for homebrew (and more worryingly, piracy) is unclear, but we can't imagine Nintendo would relax its security.

Destructoid has also reported that the 3DS’s cartridges are wider than standard DS ones, so we may well be looking at significantly increased ROM sizes for 3DS software.

Even so, a DS game isn’t a huge proposition in terms of required space, so with any luck the bane of the ugly third-party cartridge case is finally at an end.
