Texas-based developer Renegade Kid has announced a new platformer for the 3DS. Mutant Mudds will be available on the Nintendo 3DS eShop at an unspecified date in 2011.

Best known for DS titles Dementium: The Ward and Moon, the company will be self-publishing Mutant Mudds for the forthcoming downloadable service.

You play as Max, tasked with ridding the world of the eponymous enemies using a water gun and a water-powered jetpack. Sounds a little like Super Mario Sunshine to us, although - ironically, given the format - Mutant Mudds abandons the impressive 3D visuals of Renegade Kid’s previous titles for a retro-styled 2D look.

The 3D element comes into play with Max’s ability to leap between foreground and background to progress, accompanied by stereoscopic effects described as “amazing” on the game’s official blog.

Mutant Mudds was originally designed for DSiWare, under the title of Maximillian and the Rise of the Mutant Mudds, before Renegade Kid transferred development over to 3DS. The game is due for release later this year.

Chris has been gaming since the age of five, though you wouldn't think it to see him play. Thankfully, his knowledge of the medium is as impressive as his unerring ability to fail at Angry Birds.
