Bravely Default Flying Fairy receives cover art, gets mature rating in Japan

Square Enix revealed the box art for its upcoming roleplaying game Bravely Default Flying Fairy, and it prominently features a… well, flying fairy.

Less prominently featured is the CERO C rating, which is 15+ and the rough equivalent of a mature (M) rating for a video game.

From what we've seen of the game, the rating is a bit of a surprise as it certainly did not appear to contain many - if any - mature themes or suggestively rendered characters.

Given the prominence of airships in Bravely Default Flying Fairy, it is likely that a few alcohol, tobacco, or gambling references are mixed into the game's dialog which may explain its rating.

CERO C, or PEGI 12+?

Wide discrepancies between Japanese and western ratings have existed in the past, even amongst our Pocket Gamer Gold Award winners.

Persona 3 Portable
, for example, received a CERO B (12+) rating in Japan, but was rated M (17+) by the ESRB in America and PEGI 12+ in Europe. The World Ends With You received a CERO A (all ages) rating, but was slapped with a T (15+) rating by the ESRB and was rated PEGI 12+ in Europe.

Square Enix has not revealed any information about when, or if, Bravely Default Flying Fairy will make its way to Europe or North America.
