1001 Spikes is a retro-style "masocore" platformer that's just as threatening as its title would suggest.

It started off life as an Xbox Live Indie Games title, and has the same appeal as Rick Dangerous. So, yep, the level designs are unpredictable and unforgiving.

Luckily, you're given 1,000 lives on which to rely. It's surprising how many you'll use to get to the end of the game.

This remake of cult favourite Aban Hawkins & the 1000 Spikes has been picked up by Cave Story+ publisher Nicalis. That means it will be heading to 3DS, Vita, other consoles, and PC.

Being an enhanced remake, 1001 Spikes has a couple of brand-new features. And we're not just talking about an extra spike and an extra life.

There are new challenges to take on as you attempt to rescue your father from the South American ruins, for starters.

More exciting, though, is the 4-player local co-op and versus gameplay. You'll either have to work with or against your friends to succeed.

The new trailer that's embedded above showcases the multiplayer madness of 1001 Spikes. Nicalis has also tweeted that 1001 Spikes will be out "soon".

I'd say that it's right about time to get excited about it, then.
