Qrank gets location-based adhoc multiplayer quiz mode
Don't check in. Quiz in
As a quiz fan, I've enjoyed Ricochet Labs' daily slice of multiple choice questions, despite its US-centric nature, since it was released in April.
Now however, Qrank has received a substantial update in the form of Qrank 2.0.
The big new feature is the addition of a location-based head-to-head option.
Called Qrank Live (Beta), it enables you to set up your own adhoc games, as you create a QrankSpot, that other players can log into. Once set up, new games start every 15 minutes, and there are eight questions per session.
DIY quizAs with Qrank, you're asked a trivia question that you have to answer as quickly as possible: the faster you answer, the more points you get. You can change your answer whenever you want to, at the cost of a lower points total, of course.
Significantly, the content for these hotspots can also be customised. For example, if playing Qrank in a movie theatre, set film questions. And award badges can be customised to location too.
Four Square, too square"We're excited to take location to the next level," said Rodney Gibbs, Ricochet's CEO.
"Checking in can be a chore that quickly loses its lustre. Infusing location with competitive, compelling entertainment and custom content, Qrank gives location real meaning."
Qrank, including the Qrank Live - which is still in beta and occasionally throws up some odd issues - is available now and free.
And demonstrating the system in action, check out the Texas Tribune and Jo's Coffee Shop hosting the first ever Qrank Live event in Ricochet's hometown of Austin.
