While gamers nervously rattle the change in their pockets and ponder whether or not to buy a DSi XL, Gamekult has kicked off an enticing new rumour that a full-on hardware sequel is currently in the hands of several game studios.

Dev kits of the Nintendo DS2 are supposedly doing the rounds, though no sources have been named and naturally Nintendo is refusing to comment.

It's surely only a matter of time before Nintendo does finally take the leap into next-gen handheld gaming, so this isn't an entirely outrageous rumour. It's just inherently unconfirmable (I was forced to invent a new word just there) and therefore hard to get excited about.

This DS2 dev kit is said to be scheduled to go into commercial production this year, with the chance of hitting the shelves toward Christmas. We'll keep our powder dry until E3 in June, but there's no harm in discussing what sort of features we'd like to see in the hardware sequel to the most popular console of all time.

Tell us what you want from the DS2 in the comments below.

Spanner Spencer
Spanner Spencer
Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
