Folks worried about the end of the Virtual Console can breath a sigh of relief. According to IGN, Reggie Fils-Aime, president at Nintendo of America, explained that Nintendo Switch Online, the console’s online service arriving this September, will be the successor to the Virtual Console.

Reggie explained:

"The Virtual Console successor is Nintendo Switch Online, right? With the mentality that says we're going to be offering a slate of games, and it's a slate that's going to increase over time. For many of these games, there's going to be additional online capability provided in those games. That's the vision we have for how to best bring our legacy content to Nintendo Switch."

The Virtual Console helped reunite fans with a huge library of their favorite classic Nintendo games, starting with the Wii and continuing on to the 3DS and Wii U. Naturally, folks were a little upset to hear that the Virtual Console would shortly become a thing of the past, but it’s a relief to see that Nintendo has plans for distributing retro games on the Switch.
