Between The Westport Independent and other games, Paper's Please seems to have inspired a subgenre of games about authority, privacy, and the power of information. Need To Know looks to approach those themes through the modern lens of digital surveillance and government watchlists.

Instead of checking passports in an Arstotzka border booth, you play as a member of the NSA-esque Department of Liberty, analyzing potential threats and deciding if they're valid.

This means tracking their movements, digging through texts and browser histories, studying their financial records, among other means, to determine if a person is a threat.

As you progress through your career, you'll get higher security clearance and advanced tools to take on more challenging missions, such as exposing a cult and locating art thieves.

But in Need To Know, knowledge is power. You can use your tools for the good of the country...or you can blackmail and sabotage people, cover up crimes, manipulate elections, and use the information to improve your own personal life and career.

You'll even be able to act as a whistle-blower and leak information to expose the Department's operations to the public.

Need To Know is currently on Kickstarter, and has already achieved its main goal and all stretch goals. The game is confirmed for PC, Mac, and Linux; the developers have considered how to make Need To Know work on mobile and hope to bring the game to more platforms in the future.
