Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable receives release date, goes digital-only

There's good news and bad news regarding the upcoming sci-fi shooter Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable (formerly Earth Defense Force 3).

To lead with the positive, the game received a firm North American release date of January 8, 2013 and will cost $39.99.

Now, for the bad news: there's still no word on a European release, and the game appears to be a digital-only release.

What about the box art?

A post on The PlayStation Blog by D3Publisher mentioned only that the game would be "available as a digital download", and fans of the franchise soon confirmed that their physical pre-orders had been canceled.

Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable no longer has a listing on either Amazon.com or Gamestop.com, suggesting that the physical run of the game has indeed been canceled.

Newegg, conversely, still has a product page for the game, but lists a price of $29.99 and a release date of February 12.

To see which site is correct, we've contacted D3Publisher directly and asked if there are any updates on the physical/retail copy of Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable.

Regardless of what form the game takes, players will no doubt enjoy the new content and co-op mode of Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable when it takes off in 2013.
