Following the release of Aero Porter and Liberation Maiden, Level-5's ambitious Guild01 Collection will conclude with the release of Yasumi Matsuno's dice-based RPG, Crimson Shroud.

Matsuno is no stranger to the genre of roleplaying games, having worked as the director of both Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy Tactics but Crimson Shroud is looking like one of his more creative projects to date.

In the game, you play as a chaser (bounty hunter) named Giauque who's hired to track down the Crimson Shroud.

Joining Giauque on his quest are his companions Frea and Lippi, who balance out his melee focus by providing magic and ranged attacks, respectively.

This is how I roll

While its story is intriguing, the real allure of Crimson Shroud lies in its dice-based system that recalls the experience of tabletop gaming in all the right ways.

Crimson Shroud has players rolling dice and positioning pieces on a board as they explore a dungeon, but combat takes place through a standard menu-driven turn-based combat.

Dice will still play a factor in these battles, however, as they'll be used to determine the success of some actions and the strength of spells and attacks.

This quirky RPG also features an impressive soundtrack by Hitoshi Sakimoto, who is known for his work on the soundtracks of Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics A2, and the Valkyria Chronicles franchise.

Crimson Shroud will land on the 3DS eShop on Thursday, December 13 for £5.49 / $7.99.
