A sequel to beloved space trading sim Elite could find its way onto mobile devices - provided Frontier Developments hits its £1,250,000 Kickstarter target.

Originally released on the BBC Micro back in 1984, Elite was a revolutionary blend of 3D wireframe graphics and vast procedurally generated galaxies.

Once inside this brave new digital world, players would attempt to reach the rank of 'Elite' by trading, upgrading their ship, and occasionally indulging in a spot of space piracy.

"It's a game I've wanted to come back to for a very, very long time," Frontier Developments founder David Braben told the BBC.

Obviously, we think a mobile version of Elite would be the best thing to happen to us since we 'stumbled across' that 'abandoned' cargo freighter crammed with textiles and gemstones.

With that in mind, Pocket Gamer contacted Braben to ask whether Elite: Dangerous might appear on mobile devices in the future if the ongoing Kickstarter campaign is successful.

"Yes - we will look at other platforms in the future, but the Kickstarter campaign is for PC," Braben replied.

"If / when we hit the £1.25m level, we will then consider other elements - including other platforms, including console, mobile, and tablets. We are certainly thinking about it."

So, there you have it. If you want the chance to play the next Elite on your iPad, head over to the Elite: Dangerous Kickstarter page and give generously.
