The midsummer consumer doldrums descended upon Japan this week as hardware sales fell across the board.

The Nintendo 3DS is still ranked as the top-selling system for the week of July 2nd to July 8th, but sales fell 20 per cent from 65,267 to 51,930 units sold.

Meanwhile, the PS Vita’s strong performance from last week – lead by the release of the Crystal White colour option – faded quickly and its sales dropped nearly 50 percent, falling from 22,638 to 11,544.

This placed the PS Vita in third place overall, behind the PlayStation 3.

The unstoppable Pokemon machine

Nintendo’s Pokemon Black & White 2 once again claimed the first place spot in software, selling 181,756 copies – nearly double the amount of the second highest-selling title, Etrian Odyssey IV (Nintendo 3DS).

The highest ranked PS Vita title was Atlus’s Persona 4 The Golden, which claimed the #16 spot, selling 5,953 copies.

Metal Gear Solid HD Edition – which debuted in Japan last week – sagged from 8th place to 26th, selling just 4,496 copies.
