After being picked by PG as one of this week's best-looking new releases, BeyondDead has arrived on the App Store to prove its worth.

Clearly influenced by the sprawling 2D platformers of old, this Metroid-a-like puts you in the oversized body armour of a mean-looking mercenary soldier.

There's trouble at an asteroid facility (too many floating rocks, probably), and you're going to have use your advanced arsenal to cut your way through the zombies, aliens, and zombie-aliens standing between you and the truth.

You're not actually going in to an asteroid field?!

Big bosses and vast maps will make you misty-eyed for the glory days when the 16-bit adventure was king, while the modern autosave feature will ensures you won't lose valuable seconds retracing your steps after restarts.

Monster Robot Studios is also promising to add more chapters via free updates, a service that would potentially extend BeyondDead's - ahem - lifespan considerably.

If this sounds like your bag, you can liberate BeyondDead from the App Store for the indroductory price of 69p / 99c.
