iPhone shooter Fruit Blast might look like any other game starring an apple-lobbing monkey, but the story behind its development is anything but standard.

Fruit Blast was created by a father and son team, who had a dream to create a title for the App Store. They got in touch with California-based developer / incubator / marketer MEDL Mobile – creators of titles such as Boxhead: The Zombie Wars and Jungly Jump – and the rest is history.

Well, not quite.

The game’s launch was far from successful. So, Mark Lewis and his son Parker decided to rebuild it, with input from family, friends, and members of the MEDL team, before re-releasing the title on the AppStore as Fruit Blast 2.0. The result? A hit.

"This whole process has been an amazing experience for my son Parker and I," Lewis Snr explains. "It's a real-world opportunity to teach him about following your dreams, learning from your mistakes, and not giving up on success."

The core of the game remains the same – players tilt and move their iPhone or iPod touch to aim weapons and blast fruit before it hits the screen. But the new version has polished and refined that template, adding new weapons through in-app purchases, as well as Game Center support.

The new release was made available for free for the first 10,000 users to download, and Fruit Blast 2.0 has already passed that barrier. You can buy it from the link below for 59p.

And whilst you're heading in that direction, take a peek at the trailer.
