Massive iPhone publisher Chillingo, behind the likes of Angry Birds and Cut the Rope, has announced that its added support for freemium games in its Crystal SDK platform.

That means, alongside using Crystal for achievements and leaderboards, you can use it to support your free to play game and generate revenues through micro transactions.

Games like ngmoco’s We Rule and Zynga’s FarmVille show off this business model, giving away the app for free and then selling virtual goods and in-game currency for real cash.

“We now offer our developers two alternative business models to engage gamers – the traditional one-off paid model, and a freemium model,” said Joe Wee, co-founder and director of Chillingo.

The first game to use this technology will be My Kingdom, an upcoming MMORPG that’s location-aware, free to download, and filled with virtual goods to buy.
