The success of casual iPhone, Ovi, and Android hit Angry Birds has been meteoric. Celebrities play it, Hollywood has been eyeing it, and a toy manufacturer has even started making Angry Birds plush toys.

Microsoft, which is launching Windows Phone 7 later today, is so keen to board the Angry Birds train that it advertised a version on its platform without Rovio's consent. Rovio responded by posting a denial on Twitter.

“We have NOT committed to doing a Windows Phone 7 version. Microsoft put the Angry Birds icon on their site without our permission.”

Ouch. We contacted Rovio for comment, and it seems Microsoft needn't be too concerned about this episode, embarrassing as it is.

Rovio's PR vice president Ville Heijari told Pocket Gamer that, rather than being outright wrong, Microsoft's inclusion of Angry Birds on its promotional web page is, “premature at this point.”

He goes on. “We have been very outspoken about our strategy of being on every feasible and relevant platform, so we definitely have our eyes on WP7 among other platforms.”
