And so once again New Zealand finds itself in the unusual position of being ahead of the world in matters of technology. Thanks to the way the international time zones are arranged, the long awaited Sonic 2 has gone live on the New Zealand App Store.

The iPhone version of Sonic 2 follows the original Sonic The Hedgehog, which came out just under a year ago to mixed reviews thanks to problems with controls and performance. Hopefully Sega has used the last twelve months to perfect the formula.

Sonic 2 is generally regarded to be a better game than Sonic The Hedgehog. Unfortunately, it seems the iPhone version is divested of one of the advantages the original enjoyed - there's no multiplayer.

Nevertheless, all 11 of the original levels are included and there's every chance that this could be a corker. We'll know very soon.

Sonic 2 will cost $5.99, £3.49 when it arrives.
