Yesterday we got all girly and giggly when id Software's Jon Carmack
revealed his love for the iPhone, and his intention to populate the App Store with his company's hottest IPs - including
Wolfenstein RPG (coming very soon),
Doom and
Quake.
We weren't the only ones intrigued by the idea of
iQuake, it seems, as
Gamasutra has been chatting further with Carmack about the franchises handheld future.
It seems the developer has been testing out
Quake III on Apple's device, which as you'll undoubtedly recall was the version of the popular FPS that focused almost entirely on multiplayer games.
Carmack revealed he's working on improving the
Quake III codebase he's currently got installed on an iPhone.
"There are several of us that are poking around in our somewhat after-hours and discretionary time on things," explains Carmack, during an interview focused on the forthcoming
Quake Live - a browser based version of the multiplayer game. "It's kind of exciting to look at that. We're working with a more vanilla
Quake III codebase.
"But now that I'm thinking about all this stuff, if we turned this into a product, even if it's not part of the
Quake Live framework, we'll probably go in and pick up all the tweaks and changes to the core gameplay and the levels that have been developed for
Quake Live."
Essentially,
Quake Live is
Quake III with a more 'sporting' atmosphere to the game modes. If the project goes ahead as Carmack intimates, let's just hope it involves a similar pricing structure to
Quake Live, which is ad sponsored and free.

Holy cr@p!
I was forced to un-install quake3 several times. I would get addicted and was too weak to resist.
Now it looks like it will be coming to my iphone... =:-O
If it has multiplayer then it's a dream come true!
Now to check out that new in-browser(no un-install??) QuakeLive..

It could be a dream come true, or it could be a migraine inducing, poorly controlled nightmare!
The iPhone may be good at many things, but it's yet to prove that fast-paced FPS is one of them!
