Where robots go to fight forever

Konami promises battlebots and salvation in Rengoku: The Tower of Purgatory

Product: Rengoku: Tower of Purgatory | Developer: Hudson Soft | Publisher: Konami | Genre: Action
From the religious overtones of the title, it doesn't exactly sound like the most entertaining game ever, but Konami's Rengoku: The Tower of Purgatory does at least offer an interesting twist on the 'be a robot, bash up other robots' genre. Set in the aforementioned tower, which is full of discarded battle androids who must fight for eternity, you take the role of the symbolically named A.D.A.M. as he begins his quest to fight up through the levels to find out what's at the top of the tower, as well as find out the answers to the questions that as a robot he should never have to worry about - such as 'Who am I?' and 'Why am I?

Heavy stuff but of course, if that all sounds a little too Stephen Spielberg for you, there's should be plenty of action on offer too, with the Japanese origins of the game being demonstrated in a deep upgrade system so you can customise your abilities and weaponry as you progress - you can also trade items using wi-fi - as well as the game's top class graphics, which are a mixture of Western sci-fi and dark Eastern mysticism, provided by a well known (in Japan presumably) Japanese illustrator, Jun Suemi.

Rengoku: The Tower of Purgatory is due for release in October, but only if it's been very good in the meantime.
