Plants vs Zombies coming to iPhone?

Touch controls could put iPhone in pole position for conversion

Product: PopCap news | Publisher: PopCap Games | Genre: Casual
Plants vs Zombies is the latest original creation from Peggle and Bejeweled makers PopCap, and it's been causing quite a stir on PC. The game's a fairly unique take on the tower defence genre, asking you - as a small army of plants - to defend against an endless swarm of zombies.

But you could probably have gathered that much from the title, right?

What's more exciting is that it could well be on its way to iPhone. PopCap's Garth Chouteau recently stated that "Sometime within the next two to three months I think you can expect us to announce at least one new platform on which Plants vs Zombies would be arriving fairly imminently."

This could, of course, refer to an Xbox Live or PlayStation Network version. But Chouteau's next comments on control issues have bumped a potential iPhone version right into contention.

Speaking of the frantic clicking required by the game, and the problems that creates for non mouse-driven platforms, Chouteau said, "I think the iPhone is a little less of an issue, perhaps, than typical console controllers... The kinds of rapid clicking we're talking about in Plants vs. Zombies involves clicking in one place and then clicking somewhere else on the screen that can be quite far away. I think with the iPhone the ability to do that with your finger potentially overcomes that..."

In other words, they think they'll be able to get Plants vs. Zombies up and running on iPhone quicker and easier than any other platform. Interesting.

I really hope it does come to iPhone, before anything else. The iPhone is a perfect platform for the game. Its awesome on the PC, and I would love to have a portable version of it. They could well do a DS version like they did with Peggle. I expect it will turn up on a few different platforms eventually, but the iPhone is the only other version that I am personally hoping for.

Leo Laporte will be one happy man.

I play it on a touch-screen laptop, and it's awesome that way. The big swarms feel more hectic when you use a touchscreen vs using a mouse.
