Glu CEO: iPhone App Store 'hasn't been the home run for big publishers'

But steady, high quality strategy is working

Product: Glu Mobile news | Publisher: Glu Mobile
After six years in the job, he will soon be Glu's ex-CEO but Greg Ballard is going out fighting.

In an interview on PocketGamer.biz, he responds to the criticism that Glu was slow to the iPhone market with proof that it's now one of the top publishers on the App Store. It was ranked third in PG.biz's Quality Index for the period April to June 2009, behind I-play and EA Mobile.

He explains the reason for this performance is the enthusiasm for iPhone among Glu's developers. "Creativity is guiding the development process more than commercial pressure right now," Ballard reveals.

Significantly, though, he says that the App Store hasn't been as easy to dominate as some companies thought it would be.

"It hasn't been the home run for big publishers as was expected," he points out. "If you stop publishing in this market, you immediately begin to lose market share."

Check out the rest of the interview, entitled 'CEO Ballard reveals the secret sauce of Glu's iPhone success', and which covers issues such as in-app commerce, third-party networking platforms and the 3.0 OS over on PocketGamer.biz.

True... market dominance seems to stem directly from the top 100 charts. And the only way to do that is to "peggle" and/or have a constant stream of games coming forth from your company, making the App Store a game of catch-up for devs. This game does nothing for quality.

Unless consumers are tech savvy ( <-- spelling?) they will rely completely on the top 100 charts.

When are we going to get the "PREMIUM GAMES SECTION"? The more I think about it... the premium games section should not just be a melting pot of premium games. It should be a mini App Store in itself with sections so users can easily browse desired genre's

Another cool thing Apple could do is create an App Store "genius" app for iTunes and/or App Store app (on the iDevice) where Apple recommends games to the user based on preferences and past purchases

The whole process needs to be streamlined... COME ON APPLE!
