EVE Online iPhone applications a possibility

MMO to boldly go into the final iFrontier?

Product: iPhone news | Manufacturer: Apple
Designers of the massively popular (and often deliciously controversial) space-based MMO, EVE Online, are gearing up for the game's biggest ever update, and as it grows as big as space itself, CCP has naturally been looking for ways to expand the franchise beyond the PC.

"We obviously looked at the console space because it would be silly not to consider it, but EVE is such a deep game that the gameplay doesn't really lend itself to sitting on the couch with a controller," lead designer Noah Ward told MTV Multiplayer.

And, if it was coming to the super console, you probably wouldn't be reading about it here at Pocket Gamer. What did make our ears prick up like a Vulcan during a particularly intense mind-meld was the news that CCP is looking to other connected devices to expand the universe of EVE Online.

"What we're more interested in is augmenting EVE's gameplay in the handheld space, like iPhone or Smartphone [applications] that let you check your skills or that sort of thing."

MMOs like World of Warcraft already has a plethora of iPhone applications that handle pretty much everything you'd do in the persistent world, short of the actual gameplay.

But that still leaves a game like EVE Online with a lot of functions – such as checking in on your stats, trading, chatting with other users and keeping up with events – that the online gaming iPhoner would undoubtedly be very interested in.

With Ward going on to talk about the possibility of a Facebook application for EVE Online as well, there's no reason a whole new interactive arm of the massive online game couldn't be established for the handheld market.

I had a go at it in the early days.
I like space trader/combat sims, but Eve, well, I found it pretty boring.
