Cloud Spin

If you took a Ferrari, kept its sporty chassis and monstrous engine, but replaced its steering and suspension with that of an old banger, would you still have a Ferrari?

It's arguable that you wouldn't, because a sports car's handling is as intrinsic to its status as its looks and straight-line speed.

It's an analogy I'm reminded off every time I boost up Cloud Spin to be confronted by the Unreal Engine logo.

You're an anthropomorphic bunny with a rocket pack, and your sole goal in life is to hurtle through an attractive Ghibli-like world of floating islands and surreal monuments, collecting coins and flying through hoops.

The view is pulled back behind this flying rabbit, leaving you looking into the screen. You'll automatically accelerate to a decent speed, so it's up to you to steer by swiping the screen, adding a second finger to hit the afterburners.

It's this 3D perspective and swipe-based control system that combine to ruin any potential that Cloud Spin's fairytale world and Unreal Engine-assisted splendour might hold.

You're rewarded for flying close to level furniture and punished for making contact with it, while coins are dotted at varying heights. Considering how fast the world whizzes by, you'd hope for some precision to Cloud Spin's movement, but there's very little on display.

It's very difficult to judge exactly where your bunny is in relation to upcoming objects - especially given that you're airborne, and so don't have the reference point of solid ground under your paws.

So you find yourself making lots of small corrections to your course. Except the trouble is that the controls are even worse than the perspective issues.

There's a weirdly pitched analogue system at play here, meaning that tiny corrections lead to excruciatingly slow movements, while longer sweeps of your finger will send bunny careening across the screen uncontrollably.

For all the impressive scenery, Cloud Spin is actually a pretty uninspired tunnel racer that makes you jump (well, fly) through hoops with a dodgy set of controls and an unhelpful perspective.
