| Zombie Clash

Zombie Clash isn't a game that deals in subtlety or nuance. It's a violent, simplified top-down blaster that owes as much to Space Invaders as it does to a George A. Romero movie.

And while it lacks any semblance of depth, as a gory arcade highscore-chaser it's pretty good at what it sets out to do.

So if you haven't already slaughtered enough zombies to make you physically balk at the idea, you might find an hour or so's entertainment here.

Dead falling

The game takes place over a series of levels, or Cities, and the aim is simple - murder a set number of zombies to move on. That number goes up each time you move to a different city, but little else changes.

Once you've slaughtered the requisite number of flesh-munchers you fight against a fat, bile-spewing boss zombie with a health bar hovering over his head. Kill him and you move to the next city and repeat the whole process.

You can't move from the bottom of the screen, but you can strafe left and right by pushing '4' and '6'. Your own health bar runs below you, and once it drops down to zero, it's Game Over.

Various items drop down the screen towards you, including health potions and flame throwers, but the rhythm of the game never really changes - you shift from side to side blasting everything that moves.

Cannibal holocaust

Watching your undead victims turn into red smears and ribcages is entertaining for a while, and there are a few different types of zombies to fill full of lead, including dogs and sulphur clouded porkies who explode when hit.

Zombie Catch isn't a game that you spend hours poring over, and nor is it one you'll write blog posts about in ten years' time, wistfully remembering your gore splattered exploits.

If, however, you've got a couple of minutes to kill and feel the need to spend those minutes gaming, it will keep you entertained. This is junk food, pure and simple, and it never tries to rise above that. Still, sometimes that's all you really need.

Zombie Clash

Dumb, repetitive, and horribly violent, Zombie Catch still manages to be quite a lot of fun
