Updated on April 24th, at 16:40: It was too good to be true, it seems.

Many people are reporting that they can no longer download the PSP and PS1 games that they could earlier this week on their Vitas.

In this NeoGAF thread, DyslexicAlucard took a screenshot of the PSN Store and compared it to the one on his Vita.

We've checked our own Vitas and have also noticed that PS1 and PSP games aren't available to download on Sony's powerhouse portable any more.

We've reached out to Sony for comment and will update this story again as soon as we hear back from the Vita maker.

Original story follows...

A massive chunk of PSP and PS1 games that were previously unplayable on the PS Vita have suddenly become available for Sony's nearly pocket-sized wonder.

There was no fanfare to herald the retro-releases, but we suspect something might be mentioned when the PSN Store gets updated at some point today.

It's not the full catalogue as far as we can tell, but there's still a whole raft of interesting games that you can stuff onto your memory card for the first time. Including Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops.

Hopefully Sony will release a list of the games that are now available at some point in the future, but for now it's just a case of scouring your download lists and the PSN and giving things a try.

It's also worth having a look at this NeoGAF thread to see if any of your favourites have popped up.
