Since being announced at E3 back in 2010, Chocobo Racing 3D has neither been heard nor seen. We still don't even know if it's supposed to be a remake of the original 1999 game, or if it's an original title for the Nintendo 3DS.

It's looking like those details won't matter, though. Curious about the game's current development state, Siliconera decided to talk to the series's creator, Takashi Tokita.

"The original Chocobo Racing was made by me," Tokita said. "But the one for the 3DS was a project being handled by someone else, and as far as I know, it has been closed. Now, if I had made it, I would have made sure that it came out. Unfortunately I was not!"

While Square Enix has yet to announce the game's cancellation, or even make comment on what Tokita has said about Chocobo Racing 3D, it seems likely that it isn't in development any more.

It's a shame, especially as Chocobo Racing 3D seemed to expand on the kart racer in new ways.

The only video that was ever released for the game depicts what seems to be more of an adventure game. What can be seen are chocobo riders attacking other creatures with weapons, with the focus being less on pure racing.
