Samurai dating game Hakuoki: Memories of the Shinsengumi gets release date and special edition

Back in April, Aksys announced that it would bring Hakuoki: Memories of the Shinsengumi to 3DS owners in North America.

The female-focused dating game (that's 'otome game' to non-otaku) is based on the Bronze Award-winning Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom and casts you in the role of Chizuru, a young girl searching for her missing father.

Chizuru's quest leads her across the Shinsengumi, a band of Samurai sworn to protect the shogun who are also searching for her father for reasons of their own.

In the midst of this visual novel mystery, romance blossoms as Chizuru learns that she can find love - and six separate storylines - with the various members of the Shinsengumi.

Girl power

Similar to other visual novels, Hakuoki isn't a button masher. You'll spend most of your time reading your way through this one and helping Chizuru make difficult decisions - but that's all part of the charm.

And speaking of charm, Aksys announced a Limited Edition version of Hakuoki: Memories of the Shinsengumi which comes with an exclusive artbook, a traditional Japanese foldable fan, and a towel.

You read that correctly, it comes with a towel.

The Limited Edition will set you back $49.99, while the standard edition of the game costs $29.99.

Amazon lists a release date of September 24 for Hakuoki, while GameStop has a release date of September 27. We've contacted Aksys for clarification on these dates and will update this story as soon as we hear back.
