When we reviewed Junk Jack a year and a half ago, the word we thought best encapsulated the experience of playing this game was "freedom".

Sure, it might have been a bit of a side-scrolling Minecraft clone, but the hands-off approach more than compensated for that. That overriding sense of freedom was one of the reasons we gave it a Bronze Award.

Well, Pixbits has just announced that Junk Jack is back. And he's back in the shape of Junk Jack X, a sequel with a boatload of fresh content in its virtual world.

The first thing you'll notice about Junk Jack X is the swanky new artwork. Put simply, the graphics have been overhauled, with smoother lines and new textures lending the game a neat 16-bit look.

But that's not all that's changed in the Junk Jack universe. For example, that universe is much wider than it ever was before.

By finding portal pieces in your home world, you can open gateways to alien planets full of exciting new things to mine, combine, and create. Once you've visited a world, you can start a new game of your own using its architecture.

And you won't have to worry about running out of space for different games, either. Whereas you could only save three worlds in the first Junk Jack instalment, you will be able save loads more in this sequel. Oh, and rename them to keep track of what's where.

Liquids, including hot lava and cool water, are included, too, so you can play havoc with your best-laid plans if you accidentally unleash them.

In terms of other features in Junk Jack X, there's an RPG-style equipment system; an optional simplified crafting system; and multiplayer through Game Center or networked devices.

You'll even have more say over what your character looks like, and be able to tinker with its attributes with the different pieces of equipment that you build.

It all sounds pretty exciting. But how long do we have to wait to get our hands on it all? According to Pixbits, Junk Jack X will be heading to the App Store in the second half of 2013.
