Sony's Xperia Tablet Z is probably the thinnest tablet. Ever

Sony has just revealed its super-slim follow-up to the Android-powered Xperia Tablet S, the Xperia Tablet Z.

The streamlined tablet (which will run Android 4.1) is designed to stand alongside the recently announced Xperia Z smartphone on the frontline of Sony's war against Apple and Samsung.

The Xperia Tablet Z is a 10.1-inch slate containing a Qualcomm 1.5GHz quad-core APQ8064 processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and an 8.1-megapixel camera.

Images are delivered to your peepers via the tablet's 1920x1200-pixel screen, a display which improves hugely on the Xperia Tablet S's 1280x800-pixel screen.

There's a microSD slot for beefing up the Xperia Tablet Z's memory capacity, and support for both NFC and LTE.

However, the most noteworthy numbers on the Xperia Tablet Z's spec sheet relate to the device's size.

At a trim 6.9mm thick, the tablet is thinner than every Apple tablet out there - even the svelte iPad mini.

It also weighs a feathery 495g, which puts the slate up there with the lightest tablets in its class.

As for pricing and release dates, Sony has yet to reveal its hand. However, if Xperia Tablet Z's price tag is as small as its measurements (doubtful), we'll be very interested indeed.
