Nintendo has announced a pair of new Pokemon games, designed for Nintendo 3DS. They're called Pokemon X and Pokemon Y, and they will be released - worldwide - in October.

The games feature full 3D worlds, with settings like grassy fields, giant cities, and dank dungeons. They also use 3D models during the battle scenes, instead of flat sprites.

As ever, armfuls of new Pokemon will be added to the roster. These newbies include blue toad Foakie, and flaming fox Fennein. Plus, old favourites - including perennial superstar Pikachu - will return.

During the brief Nintendo Direct video announcement (posted below) on Pokemon X and Y, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata hinted that the games will make use of the 3DS's extra features. That could mean StreetPass, or even augmented reality.

Check out some snaps from the trailer underneath this paragraph. We've got more images from the games in our gallery above.
