Apple may well be in the final stages of negotiations to acquire venerable German TV manufacturer Loewe for 87.3 million euros (around $110 million)

Although the negotiations are ongoing, AppleInsider reports that Loewe should disclose its decision to Apple’s offer by the end of this week.

Enter: Apple HDTV?

Apple’s interest in building its own proprietary line of HDTVs has been a ripe source of rumours and speculation over the past few years.

With the acquisition of Loewe, however, Apple would have the manufacturing infrastructure necessary to make this project a reality.

Of equal interest to Loewe’s premium HDTVs is its line of speakers and docks that make use of Apple’s wireless AirPlay streaming audio feature. Loewe also developed the Loewe Assist Media iPad App, which transforms the iPad into a luxury remote control.

The end of an era

Loewe AG entered the television manufacturing business in 1929 and has endeavored to keep its minimalist Made in Germany” TV sets competitive in an increasingly overcrowded market. This oversaturation has lead manufacturers to sell high volumes of HDTVs to meet profit projections.

Last year, Loewe reported an 11 per cent loss of 10.5 million euros (around $13 million) despite its confidence in its high-end products.
