If we had a dollar for every friend with an unused guitar stashed away in their bedroom, we'd have enough money to buy a guitar and join their misguided ranks. Let's face, it, guitars are cool but most of their owners can't even tune them, let alone do the Stairway to Heaven solo.

Which brings us to Jam Sessions.

Like phenomenally successful console game Guitar Hero but for the DS and a bit more serious, Jam Sessions is the sort of game that makes you think maybe one day you could finally manage to tune your six string and jam on the stage of the Royal Albert Hall with Eric Clapton or The Killers.

Of course, the key to making this virtual strum-a-long device work is that you can... well, strum-a-long, by using your stylus on the touchscreen. The top screen and D-pad are used to select the chords you're going to play, making sure everything's in tune and sounding great.

Modes include a basic tutorial, a Freeplay mode (where you can mess around), and a Performance mode, where you'll be able to play alongside an as-yet unannounced selection of rock and pop tracks.

You'll also be able to record what you've been playing on the game cartridge, making Jam Sessions something of a virtual notepad for those of a musical disposition.

A likely bane for professional guitar teachers in 2007, Jam Sessions is due to be released just in time for you to embarrass, or astonish, your friends at Glastonbury this summer.
