Description

Dust and Salt is a text-based narrative adventure with a pinch of turn-based tactical battles which has you as the main hero leading your troops in a gritty, low-power, medieval fantasy world.

When his father is murdered and his village burned to the ground, a young warrior swears vengeance. He has to choose between force or diplomacy to forge new alliances and subdue his enemies. Will he get rid of the oppressors of this world or become an oppressor himself?

The game consists of a story text, a world map, and a tactical combat layer. On the world map you can choose to travel to different locations. The story text builds around the constant choices you make. Once you engage in battle the game will switch to a tactical map where the actual fighting takes place as turn-based combat. Enjoy the vivid writings by the quill of the author Sycamore Bright.

Features:

* Story is king. Rich, non-linear story that reminds of D&D with a "flair of battle". We’d describe it as a choose-your-own-adventure book that meets an RPG.

* Tactical combats. This is not checkers, this is a grown-up combat simulation. Send your light-armored infantry, the Nameless Wolves, through the woods into the back of the enemy while your armored, hammer-wielding Nameless Bears stall the enemy attack.

* Decisions matter. The narrative branches based on your choices. Your actions define and shape the world you experience.

* Character development. Are your decisions black, white or gray? Will they lead to a better future for the Sin Lands or will you turn into a usurper?

* Memorable personalities. Stand up to the cunning Lords of the Sin Lands in well-written interactive dialogues.

* Art that gives more life to the whole story. Zoom-in on the world map and experience the detail of the artistic work.

* You don’t pick abstract skills. Instead the choices you make at the beginning of the game define what abilities your character will learn.

* Featuring a gorgeous Nordic soundtrack by acclaimed artist Mike Olsen a.k.a. Danheim.

So much potential

I paid $2.99 for this game as it looked gorgeous and the backstory was interesting. Needless to say, having a total of 3-4 hours of gameplay put a damper on that. I paid the money as I was looking for a game like the Banner Saga series, and I did not get it. So far I have more hours in a free game and there is no end in sight there. This game has SO MUCH potential, but it can be beat in one afternoon. Hard to replay a game when I just made all these decisions a few hours before and clearly remember the outcomes and consequences. And it’s hard to relive the story and try and make it different when all you can do is recruit the same 3-5 nations to help you by doing 1-2 little missions. I feel like I should have spent 3-4 hours building up the story instead of cramming everything into that. It’s like the short story of story games. I never got attached to Wayward, or the Nameless, or anything/one else in the story as I didn’t even have the time to develop a connection. Tl;dr I love the concept (world, nations, characters, etc.) but it’s way, way, WAY too short and feels rushed the entire time.

The length of the game is too short for what you pay for.

Overall Excellent Quality

Overall: This game was very well put together and I would highly recommend playing it.

Pros: This game is well put together. The story is fast paced and engaging. The tactical combat is interesting and fun and it’s important to remember the strengths and weaknesses of each troop. There are a couple things that are required to be completed towards the end or are harder if you attempt them too soon. Every choice matters greatly. Some choices will be punishing and as a result, you can be denied troops or information or allies. The graphics were very good. If you’ve ever played the Sorcery! games, then you’ll already be familiar with how the choices and story are displayed and progress.

Cons: There were a couple points in the story that I wish went into more depth. I encountered the occasional bug but it was quickly resolved by reloading the app.

Time to Complete: My first run took me 2.4 hours on screen time to complete (including the very occasional save scumming I may or may not have done).
