Micro-blogging service Twitter is picking up a head of steam - traffic to its website apparently leapt tenfold during 2008 in the UK, while celebrities like Stephen Fry, Britney Spears and, er, the fictional characters from Mad Men are all using it.

Can it be useful to the mobile games industry, though? Developers and publishers are getting more social media savvy, using Facebook, YouTube and their own blogs to promote games. Could Twitter fit into that strategy?

Gameloft may think so. The publisher appears to have just launched a Twitter feed for its Hero of Sparta game, although there are no tweets on it yet.

We're not entirely sure how they plan to use it - receiving updates along the lines of 'Just hacked up a minotaur, gotta love that big sword' may have limited novelty value.

But it's good to see publishers experimenting with Twitter to see how it can work for them. Other firms with Twitter feeds include EA Mobile has EA Mobile, TAG Games, ngmoco and Namco Networks.

(If you're a mobile games firm and have one that we've missed, please leave a comment with the URL).

Now would probably be a good time to mention the official PocketGamer.biz feed, and also the official Pocket Gamer feed.
