App Army Assemble: Golf Zero - a hole in one or sub-par?
Call in the troops
Ever since we got a first look at Golf Zero a few months ago we've been aching to get our hands on it.
Part golf game, part action game, this isn't your regular golf course. Even with horrendous drops, circular saws, and plenty of opportunities to die horribly, you've still got to get that ball in the hole.
Our Reviews Editor thought it was good enough to give it Pocket Gamer's Gold Award, but what did our App Army think of it? Let's find out.

This is an interesting take on golf, to be sure. You take your shot in slow motion and you only have three seconds to do so. However, the shot power is not adjustable, which bugs me more than I thought it would.Barrett Bear Baker
The bad: its controls are a bit awful to be honest. The slow-mo chugging of the aiming should be switched with a slide so I could slide an arrow to where i want to aim. The directional pad is fine, though, I don't mind it.The good: it's brilliant. It's hard as ice and it doesn't hold your hand. I won't get into the resurgence of hard games on the App Store, but I'm happy about this. Most other people wont be though, and free is a good idea for this game. This is definitely a trick shot game where luck plays a role too. All in all, so far, this game has me kind-of hooked.

This is not a mobile game - this is a console game you play on your phone. Solid level design, responsive controls, and polished art. Equal parts maddeningly fun and criminally frustrating. You don't have to be a fan of golf, but it helps to have a handle on Super Meat Boy.Kainen Ryan
Okay, so, this game feels like a chore to play. So far is boring and really no fun at all. I'm not sure why people are liking this so much. It looks like a four year-old drew it and plays like a chunky game from the 70s. I'm not saying every game has to look amazing (I love Minecraft) but this doesn't back its crummy looks with some sort of great gameplay. I'm forcing onward to see if gets better, but so far it hasn't.Roy Blanche
Didn't enjoy this at all and found it to be quite tedious. I deleted it within 20 minutes and played Super Stickman Golf 3 instead. I'm sure it will appeal to some, it's just not my cup of tea.Jc Ga
I found the rhythm of this game quite odd, and it grew pretty repetitive quickly. I'll try again tomorrow, but I don't find it very intuitive, which is a shame because the whole thing is very cute.Buddy Reno
I enjoy this concept but I find the execution to be lacking. It feels like a prototype with some coats of paint in places. There's a good game hiding in there, but you'll have to look past a few things.- The repetitively awful music. It's the same music over and over again. You'll want to play with sound turned off.
- 40 levels with no change in scenery. This just makes the music more irritating. It feels like you're playing without progressing. Yes, Desert Golf doesn't really change, but I'm not expected to jump, dodge, aim, and shoot at the same time.
- It feels like Super Meat Boy, which meant that as I played I was meant to fail and retry over and over again. That's fine but then after a couple quick tries, (about five or so) I'm greeted with an ad that crashes the game. Ad strategy should be different for this type of play to keep from deterring gamers.
- Speaking of Super Meat Boy, MFi controller support would be exactly the way I would want to play this game. Sadly, I couldn't get mine to work.
At this point, I cannot recommend this game. I'm unable to look past the points above to enjoy it further.

So after playing over 10 levels (several tries to achieve the gold medals), I really like the core mechanic of the game. It's so cool to nail it after several attempts and get a gold medal, so the difficulty curve is on-point. The visuals are fine but as others said the loop of the music is so short and there's only one song.I also find it a bit of a deal breaker that when in mid-air, and having only three seconds of slow-mo to make your shots, the aim circle moves so slowly and you dont have total freedom of the angle. These developers are fantastic and their other games on the App Store became superb experiences after some updates. The ads show frequently, but there's an IAP that removes them.

I found this game annoying. I didn't like the mechanics, the music was so irritating, and in the end I gave up and deleted it. I think it was trying to be one better than most of the golf games already out there, but by doing that it merely over-complicated what could have been a delightful experience. If you're willing to spend time to master the controls adequately, you may prove me wrong, but it's not a game meant for hours of play at a time.
