Will you buy a PSPgo?

Postby Spanner » Fri Sep 18, 2009 9:23 am

The PSPgo is due for launch on October 1st, but the high street is none too in pleased with Sony's new device - with several refusing to stock it, and many others saying there's been little demand for pre-orders. So we thought we'd gain the public's pre-launch reaction to the PSP hardware revamp. Vote, and be heard.

I want to pre-order from Game, but everytime I go into the shop, they say they have no info from SONY and its not on their system yet to allow pre-orders.

I can see the appeal of a smaller more portable unit but to be honest I'm not a fan of the new design or download only content. I'm sure there is a place for this and it will appeal to some for just the same reasons that put me off but much as UMDs can be irritating (horrible grinding loading sound for one) its really a minimal thing - I mean my 360 is way louder afterall!

I don't really fancy being overly reliant on Sony's idea of digital content pricing either (or anyone's for that matter) as I find that often physical versions of games (for the moment) can be purchased for much less online or in the shops. The Xbox live games on demand is a perfect example of this - for instance Assassin's Creed is on there for £19.99 but you can buy the physical game for £9.99 online. £10 extra for the 'convenience' of downloading it straight to my 360? No thanks...

Obviously the pricing has to reflect some sort of reasonable gain for the game companies and also Sony/Microsoft itselfs but when it comes to digital versions of physical games I think the disparity is a bit offputting (for me at least). Obvioulsy with the above example it's a bit different as retailers always discount old stock and follow different pricing models and it IS a different animal to digital distribution but paying more for something digitally doesn't really appeal to me. This is of course different to new games released in digital and physical format as from what I've seen they tend to match more in price. Obviously the PSP Minis will come into play pretty well for this (well if the bad publicity about no multi-player or dlc doesn't kill everyone's enthusiam!) as the concept of bite sized gaming with lower price points is good for everyone. I wouldn't upgrade to a PSPGo just for that though - but I might be tempted to download a few minis to my Slim and Lite if something takes my fancy!

Maybe I'm just old fashioned. I can see the appeal and the benefits, it just doesn't appeal to me at the moment so I can't really imagine buying one.

Plus I only got my PSP last year so upgrading is the last thing on my mind. I like my shiny silver LE Crisis Core one just fine! :)

GAME is allowing pre-orders, and I have reserved mine. Also they seem to be offering some sort of ability to get 5 of your UMD's in digital format, but to do this you need to keep your original PSP and discs until you have got the digital versions, then you can trade in your old stuff for cash or PSN cards. This is what I was told.

I had a pre-order with Tesco for £199. Taking VAT into account (which we'd claim back) it would have worked out at £160, but given Sony's incredibly poor handling of questions regarding UMD transfer, price point for download games and the uncertainty of the unit's future, I cancelled it anyway.

I like the design of the unit, and if the price comes down and Sony can get their act together then I'll reconsider, but for now I'm withdrawing my support, and it seems I'm not the only one.

I'd hold out for a price cut if I were you - it's bound to come sooner or later. Either that or Sony will offer a speced up version with a bigger HD for the same price - maybe something like that will be announced at e3, who knows...

My friend has owned PSP Go.It fit easily into hands, it is a little thinner than I would like but felt solid . The buttons, while small, are spaced appropriately that even I can use them comfortably, the fact that they are recessed to allow for the sliding screen had the added benefit of making accidental button presses a thing of the past.I want to buy this too but will wait till the price will go down.
