Don't get me wrong the idea is sound but let's look at the math.
Let's say Monster Hunter Freedom 2 (it only has an ad-hoc multiplayer mode) sells 100,000 in the UK in it's first week of release.
At the end of 2006 there were close to 1 million PSP owners in the UK (according to Sony). That would mean that by now, bearing in mind the PSP slim and lite has boosted sales somewhat, there could be anything between 1.5 and 2 million + PSP's in the UK.
Based on these rather shakey estimates that gives us a conservative projection of a 1 in 15 chance of stumbling into range of someone else playing the game. There is no telling that if you do find someone playing the same game that they will be up for a multi-player bout at the time or if they even have their wi-fi switch on (leaving it off conserves batteries).
Of course there are all sorts of reasons why ad-hoc should be good. Multiplayer between friends who meet expressley for the purpose surely find it fun and there is also game sharing. But really, how often have any of you done either of those things? I for one haven't ever indulged in either.
So the questions remains, are ad-hoc modes a waste of time or is it just me?
