Preferences defaults

Postby Mandark » Mon May 28, 2007 9:45 pm

In preferences I would like the time to include daylight saving (BST) and no email notification as a default. I found I had about 20 emails this evening from thread replies. Too many!

If I think of something else, I'll let you know.

Hi Mandark

Will try and change that -- to clarify, when you went into your profile, did you discover that it was set to 'receive notification' and you had to swap it over?

Let me know if it works. I'm getting the occasional email about threads I didn't mark as watching (at least, not wittingly) so would be really grateful if you can pop on here and confirm they've stopped coming.

Bug testing, eh?

Thanks for putting up with it.

Yes that's right Owain. I had to turn notification off as it was on by default. I missed it first time round when I was editing my profile. I'm at work at the moment and can't check my home email, so I'll do that when I get home and let you know.

Well I've got home after watching the Mighty Rams driving through the city and discovered more email notifications today. The last was around 6 pm. Preferences still have notifications turned off, so there seems to be a problem.

Thanks Mandark. I seem to have got rid of mine, although I still get a Debug 'mail' email when I post on certain older threads (e.g. the DS Pokemon thread).

Don't suppose you could keep an eye on things and see if you're only getting emails on old threads? (You can 'unwatch' threads theoretically, using a button at the bottom of the post/thread viewing window).

Sorry for the fuss.

Thanks -- I mention it because I seem to have stopped getting the automatic email replies notifications. I am however still getting a bug talking about being unable to send a mail at times (after I post) which may or may not be related!

If I can pin down the problem, it will help our technical wizard to locate the issue. We've made life hard for him because the forum software is being used in a weird way.

cheers

I have found that when I changed my profile default to DONOT notify me", it will stop checking the notify me box on NEW threads I create or threads which I have not posted in before.

But it WILL keep the checkbox selected in threads which I created or posted in PREVIOUS to changing my profile.

Hope this helps.

Hi Dansk (do you mind that shortening? Would Dan be better?)

I've got the same thing -- I'm no longer getting any notifications provided I went to the original threads that I was being notified on (erroneously) and turn off alerts (or rather turn on, then turn off).

It sounds like a bit isn't being set properly, and then is being set by that process (hark at me).

I'm still getting the 'mail debug' problem on certain threads (e.g. if I post on the big DS pokemon thread).

Our technical forum fellow will be / is looking into this, but unfortunately (for us) he's not full time so we need to wait until he has some 'bandwidth', as D Brent would say.

best

The notifications appear because accounts created from the website seem to have the "notify me of replies by default" option turned on. I didn't notice this because I signed up via the forums, which default to having the option off when they create a profile.

Threads that you've already posted in will continue to notify you of replies unless you go back and turn the option off manually. All the "notify by default" option in the profile does is check the "notify me of replies" box in threads for you, so those will stay selected until you undo them.

Basically: the main website code may need changing around to fix this, and all existing profiles may have this problem - if they do I can run a command on the MySQL database to set everyone to not receive replies.

As for the mail debug message, debug mode is off, so you shouldn't even be seeing the message, and the mail server appears to be configured (it has no problem sending out email), so it's a tricky one. If anyone sees a debug notice could they screenshot it and send it to me? :)
