How long would a PS3 Controller last for before it starts to

After many charges it will start to degrade for sure. I just want to know how many charges it could go through.
I know the 360 controllers can change the batteries but the PS3 controllers can't be and you'll have to get a new one.
I heard Sony will replace it for free but something about that seems a bit.. well fishy.
