Loose Threads: Which genres are lacking on handhelds?

Got something to say that doesn't fit in elsewhere? Say it here!

Loose Threads: Which genres are lacking on handhelds?

Postby Fraser » Tue Nov 04, 2008 12:00 am

Sure casual games, racers and puzzlers get loads chances to shine on handhelds, but there are loads of genres that seem a bit under represented too.

It's hardly surprising that there are so few FPS games on the PSP given it's unforgiving control scheme, but surely there must be a way of nailing the formula on Sony's handheld? The third person Resistance: Retribution looks to have a promising control scheme, could it pave the way for better shooters on the console? Then there's the DS, which recently hosted the distinctly non gamey and fantastic Korg DS 10 program. Should there be more of these types of cartridge on the DS and for that matter, could the iPhone not benefit from that sort of thing too?

And what about 2D platformers? Why does the fun have to stop at New Super Mario Bros? Similarly on the PSP, is there really no other company out there able to deliver another hack and slash em up that's as good as God of War Chains of Olympus?

Go on, do some shouting, you never know who might be reading :)

There's a rather disgusting lack of rpgs - especially JPRGS - on the PSP if you ask me!

I personally think the Portables have no shooters, except Medal of Honor Heroes, on the PSP and a few 3rd person ones on the DS. Mostly the portable front is oversaturated with Casual Games (especially the DS) and racers (especially the PSP) and such. But we do need a few shooters. The thing is, all I see is shooters on Homebrew, but no developers is making any good shooters, Metroid was the only good shooter on the DS, and on the PSP there is Medal of Honor Heroes 1 & 2, yet we need more shooters. Does anyone agree with me on this?

Definitely less puzzle and match-3 games please. More strategy games - I'd like a more indepth Tower Defense that you can play against other people

RTS games. Actually the only quality hand-held RTS game I had seen on current-gen hand-helds is not even out yet... yes, Im talking about Galaxy's End. Except that game I dont even know if I had seen any, except some niche Japanese ones. Shooters are lacking to. Yes, the PSP has the two Syphon Filter, Medal of Honor and SOCCOM games ( well actually 3 SOCCOM and Syphon Filter games but one is a TBT game and the other is DLC only ), and the DS has MPH and Dementium the Ward and both systems have at least a half dozen mediocre shooters to, but its still not enough IMO.

For beat'em ups Chains of Olympus was great for the PSP, and Im certain that Capcom wouldent disapoint with a Devil May Cry game neither ( Dance of Sparda anyone?), but again, I would definatly want more. Ninja Gaiden DS was great, but I would want one for the PSP to, because it just fits the system more. For the DS I would like to see more 3D platformers, because its more then capable to handle them ( as SM64DS proved it ).

And as a final idea I would like to add horror/survivor games to. resident Evil DS, Silent Hill Origins and Dementium proved that both systems can handle games that are capable to spook us out, so why dont we see more of them? I know that sales might not be stellar, but IMO the market is still there and pretty open, and it might be a great financial bet to ;)

Definitely JRPGs. I can find bits and bobs on both consoles but I want more of them, now!
