Loose Threads: What will TGS have in store for handhelds?

Postby Fraser » Wed Oct 01, 2008 10:00 am

There are plenty of rumours flying around just now about the imminent announcement of a new DS. Will the Tokyo Games Show set the stage for the grand unveiling of some new Nintendo handheld, and if so, what will it be like? Or perhaps more importantly, what would you like it to be like?

Meanwhile Sony has been talking up the PSP, claiming it has fifteen new titles ready to announce at TGS. But what will they be? Or rather, what would you like them to be?

I'll go first. I thing a new DS will be announced at TGS and I think it will do away with friends codes, in favour of a less complicated system. What I would like however is a new Nintendo handheld with hi-def screens and tilt controls. As for the PSP, I reckon we are going to see a few sequels emerge and maybe even some sort of MMO. I'd be all for the MMO, not so keen on the idea of too many more sequels to be honest though.

Your turn...

I'm looking forward to seeing Level 5 show more of their newly announced titles. Apart from that, on the PSP side, Garnet Chronicle (thanks to the surprisingly good demo), LocoRoco 2, Patapon 2 and Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep.

Slightly less on the DS but I'm looking forward to Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days.

Well there are already many announced games that will make TGS a big event. Patapon2, LocoRoco 2, Dissidia, Birth By Sleep, Parasite Eve3, Agito are just some of them ( and lets dont forget Nintendo with the new DSi, Mario & Luigi 3 and Phantasy Star Zero ). But to be honest Im more interested in what was kept secret. This could go two ways: either we will see nothing new, just the pre-announced games like last year and a couple of smaller IPs or we will see some truly big games announced, making TGS far bigger then E3.

Capcom could show PSP owners that they will support the system with more then an old hack/slash port, and maybe we will finally see the long announced Devil May Cry: Dance of Sparda. Maybe we will also see a new Monster Hunter Portable game, mainly because the Wii version might not have the same commercial success as Portable 2 G had ( more then certain that it wont). Im also expecting Capcom to announce a couple of quality games for the DS, tough this far they never released on it nothing of the caliber MHP games are.

Square Enix will probably ride the hype wave of their console releases, while Dissidia and BBS will be an important part of their presentation to. I dont think that more games for the PSP will be announced, but we will probably see lots of DS love with at least 3 or 4 spinnofs/remakes announced.

Namco Bandai could announce Tekken 6 going multiplat., but for handhelds... well I dont know... maybe a couple of Gundam games will be shown for both the DS and PSP.

And as for Konami... well they could show Hideo Kojimas new PSP game, and probably the DS and PSP version of PES 09 will be seen a lot to... other then that Im not seeing it announcing big games for the portable crowd ( tough a DS Silent Hill could be interesting).

Now I would like to see if first party devs will make a huge showing on the handhelds, but to be honest I dont think that this will happen. Both Sony and Nintendo are way to focused on their home-consoles at the moment, and they also know that their smaller systems have a pretty secured place on the market... So for me the most interesting things are coming from Capcom and Square-Enix... or at least I hope they will come.

I'm only bothered about one game and that's Dragon Quest 9 on DS. Having said that, I've only just left the first town in DQ8 on PS2 so with 100 hours of gameplay left, I'm hardly lacking DQ action.
