Which film/TV licenses deserve their own portable game?

Postby Fraser » Wed Apr 02, 2008 12:49 pm

Film and TV licenses have long since held a shoddy reputation in the gaming world, but slowly it seems that portable gaming is doing its level best to finally put things right.

On PSP, The Warriors was not only a delicate treatment of the subject material, but a great game too. The Transformers game shone on DS in a way that the home consoles could only wish for and mobiles are host to admirably successful takes on popular TV licenses like CSI and Lost.

So is this trend something developers should be looking to capitalize on? Are there licenses out there that have failed on under the TV consoles that deserve a second bite at the cherry in the portable space?

As always, your thoughts below are what get us through the cold dark lonely nights so do chuck in your 2 cents, fame awaits you in next week's Loose Threads.

I reckon an Itchy and Scratchy Gore fest of a game would be cool.

But in general, games from movies are pretty dire, apart from a few exceptions.

Well I love Heroes at the moment and I think it would make a good concept for a Game. Where you have to take control of each character to solve the mystery/problem.

However, I think for licenced tie-ins it would be better if the games houses where given more freedom, letting them create the actual story/content, only tied to ensuring that the characters and story fit in with the overall concept.

It's really a shame that most of these games are that bad, because they mostly sell units due to the license and not to the gaming quality. So why try harder?

Anyway, I'd like to have a Family Guy adventure or another Garfield game (I played one on my Amiga about 20 years ago).

And why not an add-on like "The Sims: Malibu Orgy with Charlie Harper" ;)
