DS Shovelware and my slide towards the PSP

Postby icarus_kid » Tue Dec 11, 2007 2:30 pm

The phenomenal success of the DS really makes the PS look bad.

I would say though that as far as my DS game buying habits go it's almost completely first party, and when I look at the release line up for it I'm dismayed at the amount of games aimed squarely at young children for the Christmas season. At my local branch of Game a friend challenged me to find a game whose box design had mature/adult (or at least not kiddy or anime) themed boxart. I could hardly find anything, eventually managing to dig up Dead & Furious and Drothers in Arms DS.

By contrast the PSP is home to many more games of this type. Though the quality may not always be great (this is the case with every console,) it has a much larger library of games that I want to play, and I'm very excited about the prospect of a Christmas with the likes of Tekken, Killzone, Syphon Filter, Football Manager and Socom.

With a library of such quality I can't see the PSP going away any time soon, and though I won't be retiring my DS any time soon I know what console I'll be putting most of my hours into.

I hear where you're coming from, the DS mostly caters for the younger audience.
However there are quite a few adult themed games, such as the brain training games, although TBH, I don't really like those types of games.

What DOES grab me with the DS is a combination of a few child orientated games such as Mario kart, Zelda phantom hourglass.

But the games I mostly play are Puzzle quest, Dicewars (homebrew), Dementium the ward, Dead and furious, Geometry wars, advance wars and games like that.

There are a few others I play, but those are the main ones.
For me, that's plenty to justify owning a DS for.

Also, I have 2 young children, who the DS is ideal for.

As to the PSP, well, I've almost bought one a few times and may well still buy an older model once the price of it drops dramatically.
However I still haven't seen enough games that really grab me.

As to the DS shovelware.
Yeah you're right, there IS a lot of that, but then again it easy to avoid.

I have maybe 10-15 DS games. All good.

Before I buy a game I check out sites like this and see what they're like and check youtube as well.
All in all I've had no probs finding the good games and overall , there's probably more good DS games than there is good PSP games.

I agree with many of your observations aboutthe DS, even though I play mine daily. Civilization Revolution & Both the ADvance Wars games are enough reason for me to own a DS. And I have to admit some of the casual games or maybe they'd be considered platformers lately like N+ I have found really enjoyable. However, I just got my PSP and there is a distinct difference in quality of the games overall. I DO wish they'd pick up on third party produ ction for the PSP though. I personally feel the PSP is well suited for racers, although not all racers avail right now are great for it.

I have about 5 games for it, but since most PSP games are longer and more detailed, it will take longer to play those, on the PSP than it will take to play the average game on the DS. I try and seek ut games that have massive replayability, like ones where you can create and upload levels, thereby makiong the purchase/fun longer lasting.

For example, CIV REV for the DS has an unlimited replayability as you are mostly playing against other people, after completing the first maps and challenges, the same is true for the other games, Advan Wars (make your own maps and upload) and N+ Make your levels and upload.....)

I have a neighbor who buys all that shovel ware, I take her boxes and sell them on Ebay, 18 boxes (& instructions, no game), sold on ebay buys me a new DS game or two, so I can't really complain about them myself...They're supporting my DS game habit.

Heck, some of them are little more than a flash game ported to the DS; N+ is a good example, as it WAS a flash game, but it is also an exception as it is fun too.

I've bought dozens of games over $2000.(USD) worth since buying my DS, that's about 60 games, only 9 of them do I play and keep. Some of them, I can't figure out how they get such a good rating across the boards when they suck so badly, if that's even a word. I really have to question peoples taste when I see those ratings.

Just my two cents worth...
