DS homebrew community here?

Discuss Nintendo's dual-screen dream machine here

DS homebrew community here?

Postby danskmacabre » Tue May 29, 2007 6:07 am

I have recently bought a card that allows me to play homebrew games/apps for the DS (the DS extreme 16gb).

I'm wondering if there is or the owners of this site will allow a homebrew community here?

The reason I ask is I'm a programmer by trade (mostly business machines such as AS400s etc), however as a hobby I'm going to be messing about writing some apps using DS homebrew and would like to find a place that is willing to discuss such subjects.

This seems to be the best site so far I have found for mobile gaming really, so would be ideal for me.

Anyway, hi.

Hi Danskmacabre

You're welcome to discuss homebrew here, provided it doesn't talk go into chat about ripping off games or other copyrighted material, or other illegal activity. We'd get shut down if that happens, so we'd have to remove it immediately.

To be honest, if a lawyer came and started arguing a case about anything homebrew related, we might have to reconsider. But right now I don't see a problem.

Glad you're enjoying the site, and thanks for registering with the forum! :)

Yeah I gathered that ripping games would be banned here.
I work in the financial services industry in IT, so I don't mess about with that sort of thing anyway, too risky for my job even if I wanted to do that sort of thing.

I'm Purely interested in homebrew programming.

Here here. By far the most interesting part of the Homebrew landscape has got to be the vast array of different applications and games that are original projects or re-using the games you have purchased on other platforms.

I particularly like using the SCUMMVM DS engine to play my old Lucasarts games.

nice one!

You know what I'd like from the DS homebrew community? A proper, feature rich ebook reader.

One that you can hold vertically, you know? Like in Dr Kawashima. And, ideally, one that accepts all the different formats but can format them properly for the DS' screens.

There are so many free ebooks out there, and I just think the DS is the perfect way to read them. Good screens, internet connectivity, touchscreen for flipping the pages, excellent battery life. It could even encourage folk to start writing books specifically for the DS ebook reader community.

And if you could listen to music at the same time it'd be the perfect way to ignore people on the bus!

Hmm, not sure about that Spanner. I do think ebooks are the future, but they have to have *perfect* displays. I don't think the DS is there, although the iPhone is.

Yeah, the DS screens don't look superb, but I think theres some mileage in it as a reader. I first discovered ebooks on my (awesome) old Palm M500, and haven't touched paper since :-)

You're right about the iPhone though. Classics is a superb eboook reader, and there are loads of books on the App Store now.

Hi There

I use my DS lite for reading ebooks mainly, this fantastic homebrew DSlibris is perfect, you hold portrait so just like a book, Dpad for page chages, Y to change brightness, X to toggle night mode, select to bookmark, easy to read...
