Can the PSP overtake the DS in 2008?

Postby Fraser » Thu Dec 06, 2007 10:54 am

The 2008 games lineup for each console may be yet to reveal itself but there is no doubt that the PSP has had a recent sales revival with the hardware redesign, especially in Japan.

There is little chance that the PSP will ever catch the DS now, but that is not to say that it can't have a stronger year, will 2008 be that year? Discuss...

Yeah, I doubt it will ever catch up either.
but the PSP is far from a failure, it just looks like one compard to DS sales.

If there are lots of decent games coming out for the PSP next year, it'll do really well.
It's all about the games really.

I don't know, the DS seems to be doing great not only with newer titles like Zelda but with ancient titles like Brain Training and Nintendogs too. Indeed over on another thread someone mentioned how Nintendo is still promoting these games that are now over a year old.

The PSP doesn't have anything like this to drive numbers consistatly. It seems that the PSP is forever riding on a fleeting wave of hype, particularly in Japan: Monster Hunter Portable 2nd = loads of PSP's sold, new hardware released = loads of PSP's sold. It is pretty much how all consoles survive I suppose but to really go that extra mile, and shift crazy numbers you need those staples. How long do you play an average PSP game before swapping it for another?

For me it's about two to three weeks but maybe I need to work on my attention span.

TBH, I haven't really investigated that closely as to how many really good DS games there are as I'm generally pretty happy with the DS and the games it has to offer me ATM.

If there was a really good fantasy RPG like say Neverwinter Nights available for the PSP, I'd probably grab one.

What really turns me off with the PSP is the lack of a touchscreen, having one is like having a mouse and makes playing games so much easier.
If the PSP had a touchscreen, I'd grab it in a second and damn the battery life (as long as I get at least 4 hours out of it).
BUT, if there was a good selection of great games that I really like I'd get one anyway.

As an American, the PSP, at least here (and Europe for that matter) has no chance of taking over the DS ever in the future. The top 5 publishers for gaming software have 0-1 games in the works for the PSP this year...that's it.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's been about 3-5 months since ANY game was released for the system other than in Japan. And while Japan had a bunch of titles come out this month, 95% of them were their version of "greatest hits" re-releases. So even Japan seems to be suffering, albeit not as much, as we are on the software front.

As far as Japan goes, I'm curious to see how the sales for the PSP do after the hype over Monster Hunter subsides. Though, in Japan it seems to be doing very well in recent months, especially compaired to it's struggling brother, the PS3, which has a hard time even reaching the 10,000 units sold mark every month.

I think the PSP would have been able to keep it's success streak it had about a year or two ago if it wasn't for the PS3. That system has really sullied Sony's reputation, and it seems the lack of software for that system has scared publishers from making hardly anything on the PSP as well. I have the white Darth Vader system, and I think the last game I bought for it was Sega Rally. That's a LONG time to wait for new software to purchase. Concidering I bought about 15 programs on my iPhone within the first month, it's not like I'm not willing to spend money on games atm. :?

It has been quiet, but there has been Crisis Core, Space Invaders Extreme (don't laugh, it's taken EG2 out of the slot), Everybody's Golf 2, Echochrome and Secret Agent Clank so far. The US will be getting Yggdra Union and Star Ocean: First Departure later this year which I'll be importing.

Japan currently have Phantasy Star Portable at the top of the charts. They also have a couple of newly announced games from Square-Enix and at the end of the year and they'll be getting XBox360 hit Idolm@ster which I think will be enough to see the PSP as the winner of Japan's console race for the year - just.

Yea, but again, most of those titles came out quite a long time ago (relative to how long it takes in the gaming world for something to be "old" lol). If you look at PSP forums versus Wii forums for instance, PSP seems to always be concentrating on imports... or just nothing... because there's honeslty not a lot to talk about.

Another problem is a lot of the games coming out are rehashes. I love Disguia for instance, but the PSP game was just a port of the first PS2 game. I'm pretty sure Star Ocean is just a copy of the PS2 game as well.

It's nice to finally get N+ and stuff like that over here, but if you're like me you already got that on your PSP when it came out in Japan.

Anywho, I'm also not a big fan of Final Fantasy or Clank, so that doesn't help. I'm hoping that this holiday season something will spark new life into the system, but as of right now, I honeslty have nothing on my radar for the PSP that I want in the near future. It's actually funny how much success the PSP has had over in Japan this year because it's at such a contrast to sales over here. It's almost like as soon as Sony stopped making all the commercials for the PSP 2000, sales and software releases fell off a cliff.
