What do we want from the PSP store?

Discuss Sony's slick handheld here

What do we want from the PSP store?

Postby Fraser » Tue Nov 27, 2007 3:05 pm

There is undeniably a lot of potential here and I have found myself feeling much more inclined towards using my PSP knowing that there is an on demand body of content.

But I still want the following:

PS1 & PSP games

Metal Gear Solid
Wipeout 2097
Wipeout Pulse
Demolition Derby 2
Colony Wars Red Sun
Resident Evil
Lumines 2
Me and My Katamari

I also want films and tv shows to be available via the service and what about graphic novels, the PSP is perfect for them. Surely some sort of deal with a comic publisher where PSP versions can be sold through the site is possible.

Those are my demands but what are yours? What could the service offer that it doesn't currently?

I'll settle for a decent web browser that will use a memory card for virtual RAM. Fed up of out of memory errors after a five page surf!!! :(

Video on demand services are a must, especially as every major broadcaster in the country has created or is involved in setting up some type of VoD service. The PSP store should be one of many platform portals to allow people to access this stuff. You could have a link to the Sony Connect music store as well.

I am with you on the better browser thing but the VoD I could take or leave. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure if there were on demand videos on the PSP store I would download them but what I really want are more demos, more DLC and more games.

From what I can tell it is so far just a slightly flashier version of the old PSP store with the addition of some PS1 games and a direct line software solution.

I want loads more PS1 games and a good deal more demos, I know they are like chalk and cheese but in comparison to Xbox live the contnet available on the PSP store is paltry to say the least.

And another thing, why do the Japanese and US PSP stores get demos that we dont on our store even when the games are released in all territories? It's not like they are hard to get hold of (thanks for the Friday Freebie guys) but it would still be a nice way for Sony to flesh out the service until it supplies more content.

I really hope this isn't going to be a scant drip fed service but I have a rumbling in my gut that says otherwise.

I think the service is fundamentally a great idea (albeit around 2 years two late), provided that the games are on offer at a competitive rate (which they appear to be) to offset the fact that there's no retailer to pay, UMD/disc to make or other distribution costs.

Original content would also be a boon for the service, some casual web games/DS-style titles like brain-training or a good fun puzzler available for a couple of quid would certainly be a shot in the arm.

Games rental and try before you buy services (as are being offered by the new N-Gage) would also seem to be a pretty obvious option for Sony on this one and could be very welcome. Imagine being able to try out a host of time-limited PSP demos before deciding which one you really wanted, surely a good idea.

There might also be an opportunity for Sony to dip it's toes into ad-funded content...that was free to gamers?

I'm not so bothered about films, music, etc as I only use my PSP for gaming. So what I'm hoping Sony will concentrate on is game demos and DLC - these have previously been sporadic to say the least and I believe it's hurt the format's potential.

Regular content in an approach similar to what Microsoft does on Xbox Live would be ideal.

I'd be happy with cheap-to-download original games - it'd be great to see small developers using it as an avenue to distribute their titles. Not sure how easy it would be for these to be cross compatible with PS3 network games... I'd like to be able to play games like Everyday Shooter and Flow on my PSP - it'd be even better if I didn't have to re-buy them again in the PSP store.

Some sort of syncing between PS3 and PSP would be good - so instead of accessing the store just on PC, free stuff could be downloaded automatically to your PS3 then transfered over. Like your iPod automatically syncs with your computer.

I'd really like to see two things on the download system:

1) An Xbox live style service featuring more casual games
2) Some support for homebrew community as was tried with the Yaroze stuff on PS1, with a digital audience able to test wares for free/buy at low cost and VERY CLEAR disclaimers, we're surely onto a winner?

Also, how about a loyalty points system to encourage purchase Nectar-style?

That said my hopes aren't exactly high.
As is often the case with Sony recently, the opportunity is massive but you just wonder if they have the nouse, talents or even the will to really take advantage of it...as with UMD, PSP marketing, lack of innovative games...etc

I feel there's an opportunity for them to develop a real USP over the DS with this (at least temporarily)...let's hope they grab it!

In a nutshell you're right, but I don't just want more games, I want better prices. I really think Sony needs to think long and hard about its pricing, both of the PSP Go! hardware and the PSP Store game prices if it wants to have even a chance of pulling ahead in the handheld war.
