Racing and fighting are two of the best-selling types of computer games - so much so that even the combination of racing/fighting games are pretty popular too. In the case of PSP, there’s the hover racing and fighting WipEout Pure and the wheel-based Twisted Metal Head On. And joining the clash is Fired Up.

A real arcade thrash, the emphasis is more on combat than racing, but with strategic locations as well as power ups to be collected before the other players, there’s definitely an element of speed involved in winning.

The available vehicles have a strong military theme with everything from lightweight sandbuggy to armoured personnel carriers and main battletanks. Obviously each has different handling characteristics, although you use the same homing missiles, unguided rockets, electric bolt power-ups no matter which vehicle you’re driving.

There’s a single player mode to get you ready to action, but the main thrust of the game is the wi-fi-enabled eight-player head-to-head. This includes all-for-all deathmatch or king of the hill modes as well as team-based ones and you can share the 13 multiplayer maps with friends who don’t have a copy of the game.

And new maps will be available as a free download after the game launches on 1 September.
