Thanks to its work on kart racers such as Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart and more serious sims such as Raging Thunder and Reckless Racing, Swedish studio Polarbit is an ideal candidate to make a topdown semi-sim version of Mario Kart

And according to French website Pockett, that's exactly what its new game, codenamed Cracking Sands, is all about.

The right ingredients

Mixing up a topdown viewpoint, with cartoon characters, power ups such as missiles, mines and shields, multiple routes though large track-based levels, and slidey, slidey physics, the game seems to shaping up nicely, whatever it ends up being called.

As for launch platforms, Android, including Xperia Play and iOS look likely, although Polarbit tends to support as many devices as possible, including the likes of Samsung's bada and Symbian in the past. It's also a lead developer for HP's forthcoming TouchPad tablet.

Expect more details as the game gets closer to launch, but in the meantime, check out this video to see how it plays.
